In 1962, American bass Jerome Hines sang the title role of Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov" at Moscow's Bolshoi theater. This followed similar cultural exchanges between the US and the USSR beginning with tenor Jan Peerce in 1956, baritone Leonard Warren and mezzo-soprano Blanche Thebom in 1958; Dorothy Kirsten also sang at the Bolshoi in 1962 as I'm sure did others (did we do better as a humanity 60 years ago? Obviously).
This is the second time I've posted this video. It involved several hours of editing only for me to be dissatisfied with the first product. I am therefore posting the video again after several more hours of fine tuning. The source video and audio had to be slowed down 5%, and the source audio also had to be lowered in key a half-step. I'm not sure I have the speed totally right but this is a very close representation of Hines' performance that night.

Some time around 2014 I asked operatic baritone Joseph Shore if he would allow me to record him singing the Catholic Mass setting Mass XVII (for Sundays in Advent and Lent). He joked "I usually charge for my singing" but was happy and quick to oblige. This is the first time his recordings of the "Kyrie" (somehow the final part is missing), "Sanctus," and "Agnus Dei" from Mass XVII have been rel...

www.patreon.com/VinylToVideo Richard Crooks sings James G. Macdermid's "Charity" which is based on the poem "If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking" by Emily Dickinson. It's hard to say though as this session was supposed to have had a piano; perhaps it's a later recording that w...

The rather strange, reedy, oboe timbre of Schipa's voice is so compelling - utterly like no other tenor and deeply satisfying - and his phrasing and diction are so elegant.

I've always thought Schipa was oboe like, but there are overtones of viola and undertones of cello. With some English horn on occasion.

I would never have heard of her either, except that she was teaching at Juilliard when I was Assistant to the Dean. She used to call me “turtle lady” because I was taking an extended break from graduate school (where I was majoring in biology.) Anyhow I ventured on a series of sea turtle related summer projects on various islands in the Caribbean, Mexico and Belize. First stop was Costa Rica where we tagged turtles a la Archie Carr. He established the Tortuguero camp where we stayed and the protocol that we followed, mixing Ticos, full time taggers with American short term workers. Getting back to Ellen Faull, she quickly became one of the most popular teachers; Her vocal reputation preceded her. I love this interpretation of Vissi d’arte ❣️🎶

It's a great pity he didn't stay in America. His devotion to his mother, and I think perhaps a misplaced optimism as to the severity of the situation, led to his frequently returning to Germany. Once too often was his undoing.

Among the best of the best, though here the conductor's pace is too fast, maybe because the old 78 rpm record could not have otherwise had enough time space for the entire aria.
